Acer Aspire 4750z

The Acer Aspire 4750z is a new type of laptop by Acer and comes standard installed with Windows 7 Home Basic. As we normally use XP Professional we decided to install Windows XP Professional, but while doing that we had some problems.

First things first

We found that before installing Windows XP on the Acer Aspire 4750Z it is necessary to change the setting for the SATA controller to IDE, otherwise the Windows installer will end with a blue screen.

Weird side effect of changing this setting is that all drive letters in Windows seem to change. Not sure where that comes from. Maybe from the boot manager installed by Acer that supports an emergency reinstall.

We did not check what happens if you first install XP and then want to add the original Windows 7 Home Basic, but we will try that soon and inform here if and how that can be done.

Audio driver Windows XP Acer Aspire 4750Z

Of course we tried to install the audio drivers that came with the Acer Aspire 4750, but they seem to be for Windows 7 only and refused to install.

After a lot of searching we finally just ended up in the Realtek site and downloaded the generic drivers there. Link is Realtek. Look for the High Definition Audio Codecs (Software).

The video driver was also very hard to find, but finally we found a link here. The straight download link is here.
